Earning Her Keep:

Julia, a graduate of The Project, will not be going to college this year.  Instead, she applied for and was selected for the national Americorps program which provides young people with training and experience in a wide variety of community service programs. At the end of the summer Julia left for San Diego where she painted houses for poor families, assisted teachers with playground duty, and taught conflict resolution classes to schoolchildren.  This month she leaves on her next assignment – digging irrigation ditches in Arizona.

In exchange for her time, Julia will earn room, board, and a small monthly stipend.  At the end of the 10-month program she will also receive a $4000 college scholarship.  Julia’s dream is to work with disabled children.

Leadership ability runs in Julia’s family.  Her mother, Patty, served on the board of The Homelessness Project, offering personal insights into the plight of homeless families, their fears, their hopes and their dreams.
