History of The Homelessness Project

The Homelessness Project (THP) started in December of 1989 with 2 church partners and 2 transitional houses. 17 years later, we have 44 housing units through partnerships with 8 churches and 3 affordable housing partners. And we are still growing.
In THP’s Housing:
- Families can stay for up to 18 months.
- They pay 30% of their income to live in these units.
- While there, they work with case managers to stabilize their lives and work toward the goal of permanent, affordable housing.
- The average length of stay is 14 months.
Some of the THP Units offer families the opportunity to Transition in Place. The family initially pays 30% of their income towards rent. As the family’s monthly income increases through employment, so does their share of the total rent. Eventually they pay the full price of the housing unit where they live; having successfully transitioned in place to what is then permanent housing.
The average length of stay before a family moves to permanent housing or takes over the rent in a Transitions unit is 14 months.
THP has a history of success. Since our inception in 1989 we've served over 306 families, including 618 children. 87% of client families leaving the program have stabilized their lives and moved into apartments or houses of their own.
The Homelessness Project (THP) was founded with the belief that everyone deserves shelter and dignity.
In addition to putting a roof over their heads, THP works with our clients in many ways, including:
- intensive one-on-one case management, developing a personal relationship with the family to determine their needs.
- supporting them in developing a budget, a savings plan and specific goals that will enable them to move into permanent housing.
- assistance in making sure clients receive all the national, state and local benefits they are eligible for, including childcare.
- guidance towards schooling or a job, one of which they need to continue receiving THP assistance.
